Once we got here, we had to register as residents of our new city, Kempten. Did you find it on the map? It is in a region of Germany called Bavaria (German people call it Bayern) that is in southern Germany. The town is near the middle southern section of the country. It is the oldest city in Germany based on the written record, settled by Romans over 2000 years ago. How old is your city? How old is the United States?
Getting settled took longer than we expected. There was just so much to do. Both of my children had to be registered in German schools as well. They start school on Tuesday!! But the children didn't get out until August 4th here in Kempten, so they aren't so lucky afterall.
Although we have only had a couple of days to get out and enjoy the sites so far, we did get to go to a place called the Breitachklamm (pronounced bri (as in cry) tock klahm). It is a beautiful gorge south of here near a town called Obertsdorf. Click on the entry called Breitachklamm for pictures.
In my personal profile information, my question of the day was "What was the inspiration for Cinderella's castle at Disney Land?" The answer is Neuschwanstein Castle. It was built by Ludwig II, king of Bavaria in the mid to late 1800's. The castle was never completed as construction ended at Ludwig II's untimely death. One of the most impressive sites inside the castle is a bed made for the king. It is a huge wooden bed with intricately carved Gothic cathedral-like spires with a small stained glass chapel alcove all on the bed. Ludwig II was only able to enjoy less than 6 months in the castle. Check my profile for a new question of the day.
