The snows did come down after all, although I got worried at first. We had a horrible day of rain and wind on Friday, but finally it stopped. Then, it got colder and the stars came out. I just knew that the cold air had missed the moisture. Well, this weather girl is still trying to figure out the snowy, mountain weather here. And I was wrong, much to my great delight!! It started snowing about 8:30 PM on Friday night. After several inches, it died down to a state of on and off again flurries intermixed with brief downbursts of heavy snow, until last night. Then we got at least another 5 or more inches. The plows here are very efficient (and LOUD at 5:00 AM!!) at getting the roads clear as well as the sidewalks. And with the sun now out and temps to get above freezing each day, it should melt before too long, but the roads will be icy overnight as temps are forecast to be anywhere from -4 C to -10 C. (Ok, kids - do the math!) Below are some of the highlights of the many, many pictures we took. Can I just say one more time, "I LOVE the snow!!" Now, the real test will be to see if I can still say that in April!

First snow fights started as soon as there was enough to pick up and throw!

Bob, the Snow Blob, came into existence early the next day, but he met an unfortunately early demise at the hands of black and red monsters!

One of the brief heavy showers we had on Sunday.
The kids at play in the local park.

Mrs. Spitzer after some shopping in the snow. The car was one of many left on the street overnight. The cars today were buried even more.
These are the snow cover we awoke to this morning. It was really beautiful. Our back porch was really buried, as was the neighbors car!! All pictures were taken from our apartment, so you can appreciate the kinds of views we had this morning.

And yes, today the kids had school, although they did cancel Saturday's school. Wednesday was a holiday in Germany, but Bavaria (like a US state, sort of) needed to have the extra day for their numbers. But with the storm forecasting to be so bad, they cancelled the Saturday make-up day. Below is the school as it looked this morning for my younger son.

And then the sun came out and it all glistened!

I hope you enjoyed the pictures. Now on to the usual business. The question of the day for Friday was "Is there a difference between a German driver's license and a US driver's license. The answer depends on which country, and if you are in the US, which state you live in. We, of course, were in SC, so that means very little is different for us. They accept our license as a valid license and just exchange it for the German one, plus a little processing fee. However, in the state we used to live in, Texas, they have no such agreement with Germany, so anyone from that state must go through the entire process of getting a German driver's license. That means passing the test (in German!) for both the written and driving test. Many other countries also do not have the agreement that SC has with Germany. Several other folks that are working for the same company as my husband who are from China, India, and such, all have to retake the German driver's tests, even though in their country, they have what is called an international license in their own country. Unless their country has had an agreement with Germany, it just doesn't count. Thankfully, we were from the wonderful state of SC.
The words for today will cover both topics: Snowball, sled, and license. Snowball is der Schneeball (shnay ball), sled is der Schlitten (shlit tehn), and license is der Führerschein (fooor ehr shine where the ooo is really trumpeted with your lips.)
The question for today is "Where can one get a turkey for Thanksgiving in Germany?"
Auf Wiedersehen,
Frau Spitzer
